SMASH

SMASHUC San Diego Meetings between Astro/physics, SDSC & HDSI — is a UCSD-wide initiative that brings together researchers from the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI) to foster collaborations at the intersection of astrophysics, AI, and data science.

The initiative was launched in October 2024 and has since grown into a vibrant community spanning physicists, astronomers, data scientists, and computer scientists at UC San Diego. SMASH activities include research meetings, interdisciplinary workshops, and hands-on hackathons — including the annual UCSD SMASH & NSF HDR ML Hackathon, which challenges participants to apply machine learning to real scientific problems.

SMASH is supported by the UCSD VCRI Convene and Influence Award and NSF HDR funding. It is organized by a range of PIs across the School of Physical Sciences, including Floor Broekgaarden, Andreas Zonca, Aobo Li, Federico Pasqualotto, and colleagues across UCSD.
