UC San Diego & the Astronomy Department

The UCSD Astronomy department represents a dynamic research community. As a newly independent department (separated from Physics), it has recently recruited over five new faculty members, strengthening its already collaborative environment. The department encompasses experts in theory, observations, data science, and instrumentation.

The institution benefits from proximity to the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, plus collaborative partnerships with nearby institutions like San Diego State University.

Fellowship opportunities include NSF, NASA FINESST, Hertz, and Department of Energy programs (some with October 15, 2024 deadlines).

Research interests span “stellar evolution, neutron stars & black holes, basically anything gravitational waves, astro-statistics, AI, simulations, data science, white dwarfs, pulsars, kilonovae, GRBs & SNe, and many more topics.”
